The Ontario NDP has at least one person looking to be the party’s candidate in Nipissing in the next provincial election.

Erika Lougheed, a councillor in East Ferris who currently works at Nipissing University, is seeking the nomination.

“I am excited to join Andrea Horwath’s team – to ensure that here in Nipissing we all have access to quality public health care that includes long-term care, safe, affordable housing, and decent careers, with decent pay, that allow workers to contribute to our community with dignity and hope.” said Lougheed in a release. “Consecutive Conservative and Liberal governments have been indistinguishable. They have allowed privatization to decimate long-term care, and P3s to devastate our hospital care. They have put the desires of their powerful friends ahead of the needs of everyday people.”

She says a government that’s committed to the collective health and well-being of it’s residents is needed in Ontario, to create a better life for all, including those living in poverty, those who have been marginalized, and working people who struggle to make ends meet.

“The pandemic has laid bare the gaps in our society. A successful future requires a government that works for everyone” added Lougheed. “The current Conservative government continues to promote the same old, outdated ideas, without a shred of evidence, by doubling down on cutting and squeezing important public services while people in Nipissing get further behind. I am pleased to run on the NDP’s recently announced long-term care and housing commitments to overhauling long-term care to ensure better quality of care for seniors, and putting forward a housing plan for homes people can afford as these are issues that matter to us here in Nipissing. In doing so, we create the social and economic conditions for communities to prosper. As MPP, in and NDP government, I will put the same effort and advocacy as my East Ferris constituents have seen, into ensuring a Nipissing, and an Ontario, that leaves no one behind”.

A date for the nomination meeting has yet to be finalized, but it’s expected to take place next month.
