A section of a roadway in Callander has been been renamed in honour of our veterans.

The section of Lansdowne Street which takes in Branch 445 of the Royal Canadian Legion is now known as Veterans’ Way.

The legion takes in those who have served from the Callander, Bonfield and East Ferris areas.

Callander Mayor Robb Noon says it’s a special day.

“From my standpoint it’s a chance for people to reflect on the sacrifices that have been made so we can enjoy the life we have,” he says.

Marc Picard, president of the branch was asked about the importance of the designation as people walk or drive by.

“I just want them to pause and remember and think of the freedom that they get because of all these people that sacrifice. People like my father who was in Korea and my father in law who was in World War Two and everybody’s fathers and grand fathers who have fought in war,” he says.

The branch says there are poppy boxes throughout the area including Callander, Bonfield and East Ferris and people can also donate at the legion when it’s open.

Meantime, you’ll notice poppy boxes are set up in some locations around West Ferris.

Legion Branch 599 officials say the boxes were set up earlier this week in locations that would accept them. They also continue to sell meat pies in support of the branch.
