North Bay Fire and Emergency Services quickly knocked down a house fire on the 700 block of Algonquin Avenue this morning.

Deputy Chief Greg Saunders says they were called just before 10 am.

“We arrived on scene and we had heavy smoke and heavy flame. Our guys were able to get in there and very quickly knock down the fire. But like I said there was heavy smoke and heavy flame, so there was significant damage to the home,” he says.

“Thankfully nobody was home at the time of the fire but there was, I believe, three dogs and four cats inside,” Saunders says.

At last check some of the cats were still missing and Saunders says they attempted to resuscitate the other animals, but unfortunately a number of them died in the fire.

There’s no word on a cause as yet.

City fire prevention will be investigating.

North Bay Police were blocking off Algonquin from Front Street to Rose Avenue.
