It’s George Maroosis’s city council seat if he wants it.

Last night, council declared Mike Anthony’s seat vacant and announced its intention to offer the seat to the candidate who placed 11th in the last municipal election and that was Maroosis.

Councillor Tanya Vrebosch says they’re going with precedent.

“Councillor King, myself and Sarah Campbell had all been in the 11th position at one point. With the vacancy, we were brought up to council,” she says.

Mayor Al McDonald says they could have decided on another option.

“You could go to a by-election if council wanted to but it would be expensive around a couple of hundred thousand dollars. And that doesn’t make sense as we can go to the person who finishes 11th,” McDonald says.

If Maroosis accepts he will be sworn in on October 5th.

If he doesn’t the candidate who placed 12th will be offered the job.

That’s Ed Valenti.

Anthony passed away earlier this month.
