A major infrastructure investment has been announced by all three governments.

The projects announced by the feds, the province and the city of North Bay includes funds for widening McKeown Avenue, improvements to the North Bay Transit terminal, new bicycle storage areas at key cycling destination, bicycle racks on buses, money for sidewalks and more.

North Bay Mayor Al McDonald says McKeown will be four laned now in a high traffic area.

“The traffic congestion happens when you go from four lanes to two lanes. What we’re going to do is open up McKeown Avenue for four lanes right to the turn around,” he says.

There will be also be improvements to para-transit buses, new bus shelters with solar-powered lighting, and new digital bus stop signs, which will improve safety and accessibility.

The implementation of “transit-on-demand” will allow North Bay’s transit service to shift from a fixed-route schedule to a responsive on-demand scheduling system during evening and Sunday service.

As well, infrastructure upgrades were announced for Chisholm at Alderdale Road, Mattawa at Dorion Road, Powassan at Maple Hill Road and the replacement of the Murphy Road Bridge in Mattawan.

In all, there’s $31 million in funding announced with the feds coming in with $13.4 million, the province near $9 million and the municipalities the rest around $8.7 million.

Nipissing MPP Vic Fedeli on why this announcement is a reason to celebrate.

“This is a day to celebrate because these projects will renew and enhance travel and the quality of life for residents in our area,” Fedeli says.
