The Mayor of West Nipissing thinks municipal employees impacted by the policing transition to OPP in the community deserved better when it comes to finding out about a recent court decision.

She tells BayToday some found out on social media that a superior court dismissed a judicial review application by the West Nipissing Police Services Board.

“I think that there should have been a personal notification that would have gone out to these people, even before sharing this with the public,” she says.

The court decision paves the way for the OPP transition to move forward, although Savage expects more talks to take place.

“There probably will be further discussions, or questions, on the subject matter, based on the financial implications,” she says.

In a release, the municipality says OPP confirm that intake and disbandment will take place in February 2019.

Police Services Board Chair Barry Bertrand tells BayToday says there is a stay and the municipality cannot proceed for another 30 days which gives them the opportunity to review the results of the court case itself.

He says the municipality “cannot proceed with signing any contracts or purchasing, or renovating or anything like that.”
