Local labour officials are calling for pharmacare and decent work.

That’s the focus for the 12th annual Labour Day Picnic today (Monday) at the waterfront.

North Bay and District Labour Council President Henri Giroux says it isn’t right that millions of Canadians can’t afford to fill their prescriptions.

“As you know, Canada is the only developed country in the world that has Universal Healthcare but doesn’t include prescription drugs. That’s what we’re going to be pushing for over the next two years with the Labour Council,” he says.

Giroux also says without amendments to Bill 148, many workers will be left out so they’re demanding changes that will stop the rise of precarious, insecure work.

“We know that decent and stable jobs are the best way to end poverty,”
he says.

Today’s free picnic starts with a flag march at 11:30 am followed by a barbecue, inflatables, music and more.
