A new music school is opening in the city and there’s an open house tonight (Monday) and tomorrow.

Compass Music Acadamy was founded by Ben Leggett and Eric Treleaven.

Treleaven says the workshops include everything from songwriting to recording with Leggett.

“From beginner stuff, just doing home recording, right up to the more advanced things that he (Leggett) does. Even specific instrument workshops, bringing in local talent to teach finger styles guitar workshop, or slide guitar workshop, or drum workshop,” he says.

In terms of Rock School, Treleaven says they’ve noticed a trend with younger musicians.

“As the years go by, kids aren’t playing together as much as when we were young and we want to try and promote that. The whole idea is it’s a place for our students, every Saturday, anyone who’s interested, we can group them into a band by their levels,” he says.

Part of that includes performing in public too.

“There’s going to be recital opportunities throughout the year, we’re looking at a few venues in town where we can take people,” he adds.

Private lessons in a variety of instruments start September 11th with Rock School and various workshops expected to begin this fall.

An open house goes at 1180 Cassells Street tonight and tomorrow from 5-7 pm.
