A North Bay resident has received a commendation from the Police Services Board.

Bill Hummel came to the aid of a North Bay Police officer in an incident at the North Bay Transit terminal in late December.

Cst. Christian Elia was attempting to make an arrest when he ran into some trouble with a suspect who was resisting.

Cst. Elia says that’s when Hummel stepped in and it was his assistance that enabled the officer to make an arrest.

Elia says as a result, no one was hurt on the transit bus.

He says he twice attempted to subdue the suspect, but his conducted energy weapon wasn’t working because of all the clothing the weapon had to get through.

Hummel says he’s honored to receive the recognition.

Elia says other passengers seemed stunned as to what to do, but Hummel showed no such hesitation and defused the situation and likely prevented injury to officers.
