The reality of heating a home in northern Ontario was the focus for MPP Vic Fedeli at Queen’s Park yesterday (Tuesday).

During Question Period, he relayed the story of Robert and Carol, who live in the north.

“They can no longer afford to stay in their home. Carol wears winter clothing and a toque to bed because they cannot afford heat”, the PC Finance Critic said.

After pointing to the Financial Accountability Officers latest report, which showed northerners paid 45 percent more for electricity costs than households in Toronto, from 2012 to 2014, Fedeli asked the government if they’ll truly address the concerns of Northern Ontario.

Energy Minister Glenn Thibeault highlighted a few provincial programs and rebates, plus he says a rural/northern rate reduction is on it’s way.

“330,000 families will benefit from the 20 per cent reduction in hydro rates come January 1st”, said the Sudbury MPP.

Thibeault also commented on the FAO report, saying energy costs in Ontario are consistent with the pace of other provinces and are in the middle of the pack.
