No shortage of local sports on the weekend

A weekend split for the North Bay Battalion.

After a 5-2 loss in Guelph on Friday night, the Troops rebounded with a 3-2 overtime win in Hamilton on Saturday night.

Steve Harland scored the overtime winner right after the Bulldogs were denied by Brent Moran on a two-man breakaway.

The Battalion are back in action Thursday at home to Oshawa.

The Powassan Voodoos are home to the Cochrane Crunch tonight (Monday).

Game time at the Powassan Sportsplex is 7:30 pm.

The Voodoos won twice over Rayside-Balfour on the weekend. They won 5-1 in Powassan on Friday then scored a 3-2 overtime win over the Canadians in Chelmsford on Saturday.

The Nipissing Lakers women’s hockey team is the only remaining undefeated team in the OUA so far this season.

They’re 4-0 after two more wins this past weekend.

The Lakers scored a 3-1 win over Windsor on Friday night then shut out Western 2-0 on Saturday.

In men’s hockey, Nipissing scored a 1-0 win in Ottawa on Friday and lost 4-2 to Queens on Saturday.

In OUA soccer, both Nipissing teams wrapped up their seasons yesterday with wins over RMC.

The Nipissing women won 3-1 while the men won 3-nil. Both Lakers teams lost to Queens on Saturday.
The Nipissing Lakers lacrosse team wrapped up the regular season with a couple losses to Bishops, in Sherbrooke, Quebec on the weekend. The Lakers finish 5th in the standings with the playoff schedule to be determined in the next week.

Back to hockey, a couple of wins for the North Bay Midget AAA Trappers on the weekend.

The Trappers shutout Kapuskasing 4-0 on Saturday and defeated Timmins 6-3 yesterday (Sunday).

Joe Whittet, Mason McMahon, Cole Craft and Sam Garagan scored versus Kapuskasing on Saturday night.

Drew Joyal picked up another shutout.  Yesterday, Dylan Bond scored twice with singles from Ian Denomme, Bailey Chenier, Craft and Whittet.

The OCAA men’s basketball season is underway.

Canadore College opened the 2016/17 campaign with a 98-93 overtime loss to Seneca.

Tarez Hepburn has 23 points for the Panthers while Wil Konybai had 21.

Next up, the Panthers entertain St Lawrence College October 28th at 8pm at the Education Centre Gymnasium.

Meantime, both Canadore volleyball teams had mixed results on the weekend.

On the women’s side, the Panthers won 3-0 over Fleming, but lost 3-1 to Durham.

In men’s play, Canadore won 3-1 over Fleming, but lost 3-2 to Durham.

Both teams are home to Georgian College next Saturday afternoon (women play at 1pm, the men at 3pm) at the Education Centre Gymnasium.

The NDA senior boys football final is set.

St Joseph-Scollard Hall will take on West Ferris this coming Friday.

The Bears won 48-34 over Widdifield in their semifinal on Friday night while the Trojans won 49-13 over Algonquin to advance to the final.

And registration is open for the “Beat the Frost” Spikeball Tournament taking place at Marathon Beach on the North Bay Waterfront on Sunday.

This is an open tournament for teams of two with RSVP’s requested by Friday.
