buses

Classes resume for students on Tuesday of next week and school buses will also be on our streets and roadways.

OPP Community Safety Officer Carolyn Ward says motorists must keep a safe distance away from a stopped school bus that has red overhead lights flashing and stop arm extended.

She says that distance is 20 metres from behind the bus to your vehicle.

Ward says when the bus is oncoming there must be a safe distance so students can cross well ahead of the bus bumper.

She says failure to do so can result in stiff penalties.

Ward says they can range from 400 to Two Thousand Dollars and 6 demerit points.

Ward says additional offenses can mean fines between a Thousand and Four Thousand Dollars and even jail time.

You can be charged if you illegally pass a stopped school bus.
