It’s a milestone for 22 Wing CFB North Bay.

65 years ago today (September 1st, 1951) the Canadian Forces opened a military installation here in the city.

Back then it was called Royal Canadian Air Force Station North Bay.

To mark the occasion, a new exhibit has been launched at the Canadian Forces Museum of Aerospace Defence at the base.

Curatorial Assistant Bethany Aitchison says it’s called “North Bay @ 65”.

She says artifacts range from uniforms, military souvenirs, air defence equipment and news paper articles too, “A North Bay Nugget that says ‘North Bay to Become Canada’s First All-Weather Fighter Unit’, we have some one-of-a-kind artifacts that people have collected over the years. We also have some modern things as well as our history does continue into modern day, as well.”
She also says they’re setting up some video accounts of the base’s history too, “we’ve done some video recordings of people who have been here throughout different eras and aspects of 22 Wing’s history.”

The exhibit will be open until the end of the year.

Extended summer hours at the museum at Hornell Heights are noon to 4 pm today (Thursday) and tomorrow then 10 am to 4 pm on Saturday.

After Labour Day weekend, off-season hours of noon to 4 pm on Saturdays begin. Appointments are also welcome throughout the week.
