First-Peoples-VOTEMore reaction on the federal election, this time from Anishinabek Nation Grand Council Chief Patrick Madahbee.

He says he’s proud of residents in the 39 Anishinabek communities who voted and made a big impact in Monday night’s election.

Madahbee says, “I truly believe that our effort of getting out the vote to protect our rights paid off.”

He also congratulated incoming Prime Minister Justin Trudeau saying they have high expectations for this Liberal majority government.

“Attention needs to be paid to the health, education and economic disparity of our First Nations. Trudeau needs to quickly get rid of harmful Harper legislation and revisit the Kelowna Accord.”

He goes on to say, “One of Trudeau’s campaign promises was to implement the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples that Canada signed in 2007. It’s time for him to make this change.”

Madahbee says he will work with Trudeau as a partner to work on a Nation-to-Nation relationship.
