City fire officials are reminding people about safe cooking practices after yesterday’s fire at a townhouse on Manitou Street.

Deputy Chief Greg Saunders says a tenant said he placed a pot of oil on the stove to cook french fries, went for a shower and forgot he turned on the stove.

Crews encountered heavy smoke and fire when they arrived on the scene and snuffed out the blaze quickly, limiting damage to the one unit.

However, Saunders says the unit suffered “significant damage” from both fire and smoke.

Everyone got out of the home safely thanks to being alerted by working smoke alarms.
