North Bay Mayor Al McDonald got a tour of North Bay in a kindergarten classroom on Friday.

One of the students in the JK-SK class at Our Lady of Fatima Catholic School had the idea of transforming the classroom into a miniature version of the city.

There was a library, a fire station, a construction site and a movie theatre.

The mayor was impressed.

We asked him what stood out for him and he said it was the church and the restaurant the students created.

Melissa Laferriere is the early childhood educator at the school.

She says they set up several community centres.

Laferriere says they wanted the students to improve their literacy and numeracy skills but this exercise is also great for student interaction and communication too.

Teacher Lisa Davie says they don’t have much space to add many more centres but if the students are engaged in the project they’ll continue to add more things.
